Watch the conference ‘Place- and nature-based architecture in the Nordics’

Tuesday, 12 November 2024
Form/Design Center, Malmö

Watch the conference online and join leading experts in architecture, urban design, research, policy, and industry as they explore the future of place-based architecture and nature-based construction.

Breaking new ground in place-based urban development and architecture

Much of what is built today has a weak relation to the location where it will remain for decades. In the spring of 2024, the City of Malmö and SUSTAINORDIC launched a campaign to explore what a place-based approach to urban development and architecture means in todays world. Here, we share the insights from the 36 submitted proposals.

RECOMMENDATIONS REPORT

Future-Proofing Nordic Construction

As we strive for sustainability, we must shift our focus from new builds to reimagining existing structures and embracing circular practices.

Addressing this, our new report consolidates insights from urban planners, policymakers, architects, engineers, developers, building owners, and activists, gathered through three years of knowledge generation.

NEW PUBLICATION

Building within the Safe Operating Space

The construction industry is responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions and 50% of raw material extraction – a massive environmental impact.

Our latest publication dives into these critical issues, exploring how the sector can align our building industry with planetary boundaries.

School of Repair:  Towards a Reparative Material Practice

On September 14, 2024, we had the pleasure of co-organising a workshop at Palmgatan’s Kollektivverkstad in Malmö, where we explored sustainable construction techniques using natural materials like clay and wood.

The workshop was part of the exhibition The Great Repair Moves North and featured hands-on sessions led by leading experts.

Sustainable materials and architecture

With a focus on sustainable building materials and architecture, SUSTAINORDIC will act as a bridge builder between the public sector, industry and academia with the goal of creating positive change and development in sustainable construction. To highlight the role of architecture, the possibilities of design processes and the importance of design in the development of sustainable living environments for all.

SUSTAINORDIC Transformation Panel

The SUSTAINORDIC Transformation Panel is an advisory board composed of members representing key stakeholders from various fields, established to support the work of Work Package 3, a component under the Nordic Sustainable Construction project.

Place-based Design and Architecture: Learning from Rural Community Building

Place-based design and architecture is one of four gateways towards sustainable construction and urban planning which SUSTAINORDIC focusses on. And last week, the SUSTAINORDIC Transformation Panel visited Stokkøya and Bygda 2.0 to watch and learn about the connection between place-based design, sustainability and rural development.

Focus forward

During 2022–2024, SUSTAINORDIC is focusing on sustainable building materials and architecture, as part of a Nordic initiative to strengthen sustainable and competitive construction. The Nordic countries have joined together in an effort to find new knowledge and solutions to support the construction sector in becoming more sustainable.

Background

SUSTAINORDIC was formed in 2015 with the aim of collecting and disseminating good Nordic examples of sustainable production and consumption internationally, as well as stimulating the development of national policies in the area.

The Nordic Report

During 2018–2020, SUSTAINORDIC published the book The Nordic Report annually, which highlights good examples in sustainable production and consumption in the Nordic region.
